Gold Vermeil vs Gold Plated vs 925 Silver – SILORO Guide
You've seen the words. Here's what they actually mean.
You find a gorgeous pair of gold hoops online. One listing says "gold plated." Another, nearly identical, says "gold vermeil" and costs more. A third is "925 sterling silver." Which one is worth your money?
Most buyers can't tell the difference from a photo, and many sellers don't explain it. That's how people end up with earrings that turn green in a month, or skip a piece that would have lasted years.
At SILORO, we work with 925 silver and gold vermeil every day. This guide breaks down exactly what each material is, how long it lasts, who it suits, and how to care for it, so your next purchase is one you'll still be wearing next year.
The three materials, explained simply
925 sterling silver
925 sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver mixed with 7.5% other metals, usually copper. Pure silver is too soft to hold a shape, so the alloy makes it strong enough for daily wear. The "925" stamp you see inside a ring or on a clasp is that purity mark.
It's a precious metal, so the value stays in the piece. It can tarnish over time, but tarnish sits on the surface and polishes right off. A well-made silver piece can last decades.
Gold plated
Gold plating is a very thin layer of gold over a base metal like brass or copper. The layer is often well under one micron thick, thinner than a human hair by a wide margin.
It's the most affordable way to get the gold look. The catch: once the layer wears through, the base metal shows. On rings and bracelets that rub against surfaces, that can happen within weeks to a few months. Base metals can also react with sensitive skin.
Gold vermeil (say "ver-may")
Gold vermeil is a thick layer of real gold over a 925 sterling silver base. The widely used benchmark comes from the US FTC's Jewelry Guides (16 CFR Part 23): at least 2.5 microns of gold of 10 karat or higher, several times thicker than typical plating. Every SILORO vermeil piece uses 2.5 microns of 18KT gold over 925 silver.
This is the sweet spot of demi-fine jewellery. You get the warm look of solid gold, a precious-metal core, and far better wear than plating, at a fraction of the price of solid gold. Even if the gold softens after years of wear, what's underneath is still silver, not brass.

Which one should you choose?
There's no single right answer. It depends on how you'll wear it, who it's for, and how long you want it to last.
Choose 925 silver if…
- You love a cool-toned, minimal look
- You want something for everyday wear: work, gym, even sleep
- You're buying a meaningful gift that should last years, like a pendant or a first piece of "real" jewellery
Choose gold vermeil if…
- You want the warmth of gold without solid-gold pricing
- You have sensitive skin and plated jewellery has irritated you before
- You're building a stackable everyday set: studs, bands and bracelets
- You're gifting for Diwali, Raksha Bandhan, an anniversary or a birthday and want it to feel premium
Gold plated makes sense only if…
- It's a trend piece for one event or season
- You're comfortable treating it as short-term
A quick rule of thumb: if you'll wear it more than once a week, skip plating and go for silver or vermeil. The cost per wear ends up lower.
How to make silver and vermeil last for years
Good jewellery rewards a little care. These habits add years to every piece.
- Last on, first off. Put jewellery on after perfume, lotion, sunscreen and hair spray. Take it off before you wash up at night.
- Keep it dry. Remove pieces before bathing, swimming (chlorine and salt water are harsh) and workouts.
- Store each piece separately. Use the pouch or box it came in. Air and humidity speed up tarnish, especially during the monsoon.
- Add a silica gel sachet to your jewellery box in humid cities like Mumbai and Chennai.
- Clean gently. Wipe with a soft, dry microfibre or polishing cloth after wearing. For vermeil, avoid harsh silver dips and abrasive pastes; they can strip the gold layer.
- Rotate your favourites. Giving a ring a break now and then slows surface wear.
If your silver darkens, don't worry. That's normal oxidation, not damage, and a polishing cloth brings the shine back in a minute.
How to tell if you're getting the real thing
Before you buy from any brand, check these five things:
- The stamp and hallmark. Genuine sterling silver and vermeil usually carry a "925" mark inside a ring, on the back of a pendant or near the clasp. In India, BIS silver hallmarking is voluntary, but since September 2025 every hallmarked silver piece must carry a six-digit HUID code you can verify in the BIS CARE app (what HUID means for buyers).
- The listing details. A trustworthy seller states the base metal, the gold karat and the micron thickness. Vague words like "gold tone" or "gold finish" usually mean plating.
- The magnet test. Silver isn't magnetic. If a "silver" piece sticks strongly to a magnet, it isn't silver.
- The price. Vermeil priced like a fast-fashion trinket is a red flag. Real silver and real gold have a floor cost.
- A real conversation. Ask the brand directly. A good jeweller will happily answer questions about materials, care and warranty before you pay.
That last point matters. At SILORO, you can talk to our team before you buy, and every piece is BIS hallmarked 925 silver.
Ready for more sparkle? Lab-grown diamonds and moissanite
For moments that call for more than everyday sparkle, SILORO also sets lab-grown diamonds and moissanite in silver and gold vermeil.
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. According to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), they are made of the same tightly bonded carbon, are just as hard, and handle light the same way as mined diamonds. The difference is that they're grown in a lab instead of extracted from the earth, which means more sparkle for your budget.
Whether it's an engagement ring, an anniversary or a milestone you want to mark for life, these stones bring real brilliance at a fraction of mined-diamond prices. SILORO's lab-grown diamonds are IGI certified and its moissanite is GRA certified.
Frequently asked questions
Is gold vermeil real gold? Yes. The outer layer is real gold, 10 karat or higher, over a solid 925 silver base. It isn't solid gold all the way through, which is why it's far more affordable.
Can I wear gold vermeil every day? Yes, with basic care. Avoid water, perfume and chemicals, and store it separately. Treated well, vermeil holds its colour for years.
Will 925 silver turn my skin green? Rarely. A slight mark can appear with sweat or certain lotions because of the small copper content, and it washes off. Plated base metals are far more likely to cause this.
Is 925 silver good for sensitive skin? For most people, yes. If you react to cheap jewellery, silver and vermeil are usually much safer choices than plated brass.
Why does my silver jewellery turn black? That's oxidation from air, moisture and sweat. It's harmless and polishes off with a silver cloth.
Can gold vermeil be re-plated? Yes. Because the base is silver, a jeweller can re-plate a well-loved piece to restore its gold finish.
Which is the better gift, silver or vermeil? Go by their style. Pick silver for someone who wears cool tones and minimal pieces; pick vermeil for someone who loves gold.
